5 ways 360˚ content can be used: from virtual production, to mapping the world, and COVID-19 training

We are proud to be a partner of Insta360, one of the leading 360 camera companies enabling people to capture and share their lives in full, immersive glory.Insta360, one of the leading 360 camera companies enabling people to capture and share their lives in full, immersive glory.

We know the use cases for XR (extended realities) are growing and the versatility of the Insta360 range enables filmmakers to use this medium to tell amazing stories no matter what the subject matter.  The Insta360 Pro 2 is a six lens virtual reality (VR) camera with groundbreaking new features including a ready to shoot 8K per eye 3D video, offering effortless FlowState stabilization and simplified post-production in partnership with Adobe.

We wanted to explore the great work being created by some of the Insta360 community using their range of cameras across a multitude of different industries.

1. 360 Live stream - a world first in 8K

A dream team from Verizon Media, Radiant Images, and Flight School studio were the brains behind the world’s first-ever 8K 360˚ live stream broadcast of an NFL game for the NFL Pro Bowl in 2020. Using not one, but two Insta360 Pro 2 360 live stream cameras, powered by Verizon’s 5G network, they were able to live stream the game and project it into a dome 200 miles away in Miami as part of ESPN’s live TV coverage. 2. Immersive Storytelling - One Man takes on Google Street View

Professional photographer Tawanda Kanhema wanted to put his home country of Zimbabwe on the map, Google maps to be precise. There are still huge areas of the globe not yet mapped by Google Street View which is why Google is working with Insta360 to empower local creators to map their local areas. Using an Insta360 Pro 2 on loan, Tawanda travelled over 2,00 miles to capture Zimbabwe in all its glory. 3. 360/VR Recruitment at its best

The Royal Air Force Police shot its first 360 film on an Insta360 Pro 2. The film enables potential recruits or enthusiasts to experience a day in the life of the Royal Air Force Police. The finished film is an incredible wow experience where the viewer is fully immersed in scenes they wouldn’t normally have access to such as standing underneath a c-130 Hercules aircraft as it lands.

4. Virtual Production

LED walls are set to be the future of film and TV production, enabling companies to make huge savings by using the LED screens as background instead of the traditional green screen. Take ABC’s crime thriller Big Sky, for instance, they used an Insta360 titan to film real-life scenery which was then displayed on the LED wall behind the actors. Using a virtual set meant they could cut down on the post-production workload thus saving time and money with no reduction in quality. This was one of the first major network productions to use 360 footage with an LED wall – another first for Insta360!

5. Medical Training showcasing best practices for treating COVID-19 patients

The University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communications along with medical professionals came together to support doctors and nurses fighting Covid-19 by creating a VR medical training video that would demonstrate best practices in treating COVID-19 patients. Using an Insta360 Pro 2, the training video shows how to resuscitate a COVID-19 patient with respiratory failure. The aim of the video was to share insights and knowledge from those who have experienced many COVID-19 cases with those in areas of the US who had yet to see their first cases. Given the speed at which the virus spread, the project needed to be turned around quickly and effectively.
